What does a concrete sealer actually do?

Concrete is porous. Water, salt, oil and dirt can soak into it, and in Ontario that water freezes and thaws over and over each winter. A sealer forms a protective layer that limits what can get in.

Clear acrylic sealers, the type we use, also enhance appearance: they deepen colour, bring out texture and can add anything from a natural matte look to a glossy wet look. They’re especially popular on stamped concrete and exposed aggregate, where colour and texture are the whole point.

When should new concrete be sealed?

New concrete needs time to cure before it’s sealed. Your installer should tell you when your new driveway, patio or walkway is ready. If you’re planning a new pour, our sister company Rock Hard Concrete installs decorative concrete and we can take care of sealing afterwards.

How often should you reseal?

There isn’t a single answer. It depends on the sealer, how much sun the surface gets, how much foot and vehicle traffic it sees, and how harsh the winters have been. Driveways usually wear faster than a shaded patio.

Rather than going by the calendar, look at the surface. Fading colour, uneven wear and water soaking in are the signs to watch for.

Try the water test

  • Sprinkle a little water on a few spots, including high-traffic areas.
  • If it beads up or sits on top, the sealer is still doing its job.
  • If the concrete darkens and the water soaks in quickly, the surface is ready for a reseal.

Choosing a finish

We offer non-yellowing clear acrylic sealers in matte, semi-gloss, gloss and high gloss. Gloss finishes give the richest colour and wet look; lower sheens look more natural. For areas that get wet, such as pool decks, a lower sheen can be the more practical choice.

Weather and timing

Sealers need dry conditions and suitable temperatures to cure properly, which is why most sealing in the GTA happens from late spring to early fall. A professional will plan around the forecast and tell you when the surface is ready for feet, furniture and cars.

What sealing can’t do

Sealing enhances and protects a surface. It doesn’t repair structural cracks, level sunken slabs or replace concrete that is breaking apart. A good contractor will tell you honestly whether sealing is the right fix for your concrete.

Is sealing concrete worth it?

For decorative concrete like stamped and exposed aggregate, sealing is what keeps the colour rich and helps protect the surface from water, salt and stains. It’s a practical way to look after an investment you see every day.

Can I seal concrete in the fall?

Early fall can work well if the weather is dry and temperatures are suitable. As it gets colder, curing becomes a problem, so we plan sealing for the right conditions.
